EVENT SPOTLIGHT: Space Coast Marathon and Half-Marathon

Festivities Kickoff on Friday, Nov. 27 with Health & Fitness Expo at the King Center

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA (Nov. 27, 2009) – Running Zone and Space Coast Runners will presents the 38th running of the Space Coast Marathon and Half-Marathon on Sunday, Nov. 29. Both races start in Cocoa Village, and finish with a lap around the Riverfront Park Amphitheater.

“As the race is held within the shadow of the Kennedy Space Center, the entire event revolves around a space theme,” said Race Director Denise Piercy.

Last year, Runners World magazine selected this event ‘Race of the Month,’” said Piercy.

As part of the festivities, the Health First Health Plans Health & Fitness Expo will be held at the  Maxwell C. King Center for the Performing Arts on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 27 and 28.

The Expo will feature more than 20 exhibitors featuring the newest designs in running gear and  shoes – as well as the latest developments in sports, fitness and  nutrition.

“The Expo is open to the public, so bring your family and friends,” said Percy.

Over 2,000 runners Expected

Jeff Galloway, “America’s coach,” will be the keynote speaker, and will also be on hand to present awards on Sunday. More than 2,000 runners are expected to compete in this event, which will benefit Team in Training (the Brevard Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society).

“The Half Marathon awards ceremony will start at 9:00 a.m., and the Marathon awards ceremony will start at 11:30 a.m. at the Riverfront Park Pavilion,” said Piercy.

“Mr. Galloway, our keynote speaker, and Mike McCulley, the former President and CEO of United Space Alliance will be part of the Sunday morning ceremonies,” she said.

McCulley flew on STS-34 in 1989 and has logged over 119 hours in space.
