BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Over 4,300 Brevard County residents joined together at the American Cancer Society ‘Making Strides Against Breast Cancer® 5K walk’ on Oct. 24. Presented by Lexus of Melbourne,
Making Strides provides hope to all people facing the disease, and raised over $360,000 – surpassing the goal of $320,000.

The noncompetitive event united the entire community to honor and celebrate breast cancer survivors, educate women about reducing their cancer risk, and raise money to fund lifesaving research and support programs to further the progress against this disease.

“Time and energy are precious commodities today,” said Lana Saal, Event Chair.

“I choose to volunteer to give back to an organization driven by the heart and soul of dedicated volunteers within our community and for our community.  Cancer touches each one of us in some way.

“It’s a great opportunity to connect with others. At the end of this amazing event, you have such a feeling of accomplishment in that you did something good today to help others and truly through the power of just one person you can make a difference.”

Nation-wide Effort

This year, Brevard County’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk was one of more than 140 held across the country. The American Cancer Society continues to use the Making Strides events as one opportunity to continue to provide up to date breast cancer information, advocate for all women to have access to breast cancer screening and treatments – regardless of income – and to provide services that improve the quality of life for patients and their families.

“Almost everyone has been touched by breast cancer in some way,” said Gregory Stephens, Area Executive Director of the Brevard Unit of the American Cancer Society.

“Making Strides Against Breast Cancer gives us the chance to celebrate those who have survived breast cancer and help ensure that future generations are not faced with this life-threatening disease. Making Strides truly demonstrates that hope starts with each and every one of us.”

Fighting Cancer On All Fronts

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer supports the American Cancer Society’s unique mission to fight cancer on all fronts: research, education, advocacy and patient services. Over time, the Society has invested more in breast cancer research than any other voluntary public health organization, spending more on breast cancer research and investing more than $352 million in breast cancer research grants since 1972.

Sponsors of this year’s Brevard County Making Strides event included Lexus of Melbourne, United Space Alliance, The Avenue Viera, National City Bank, Health First, Viera Diagnostic, Ron Jon Surf Shop, Community Bank of the South, and BJ’s Wholesale Club.
