BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Running icon Kathrine Switzer will make a guest appearance at Running Zone in Melbourne on Wednesday, Nov. 18. Ms. Switzer is best known as the woman who challenged the all-male tradition of the Boston Marathon and became the first woman to officially enter and run the event.
Ms. Switzer’s entry created an uproar and worldwide notoriety when a race official tried to forcibly remove her from the competition. The photo of this incident flashed around the globe and became one of Time-Life’s “100 Photographs that Changed the World.”

This series of photos during the 1967 Boston Marathon flashed around the globe and became one of Time-Life’s “100 Photographs that Changed the World.”
Over three decades later, the incident continues to capture the public imagination and is, in part, the reason Ms. Switzer has dedicated her multi-faceted career to creating opportunities and equal sport status for women.
That career has included creating programs in 27 countries for over 1 million women that led to the inclusion of the women’s marathon as an official event in the Olympic Games, changing forever the face of sports, health and opportunities for women around the world.
Ms. Switzer has run 35 marathons, won the 1974 New York City Marathon, and ran her personal best of 2:51.33 by finishing second in the 1975 Boston Marathon. At the time, this was the sixth best women’s marathon time in the world – and third in the USA.
After organizing the Avon International Running Circuit for over a million women in 27 countries, Ms. Switzer has now has turned her running passion into work as a television broadcaster, author and public speaker. She has covered all the major marathons in North America, as well as the Olympic and Commonwealth Games, and won the first of several Emmy awards in 1997.
Her latest book, Marathon Woman, is presently electrifying the running world. Her other books include Running and Walking for Women Over 40 and 26.2 Marathon Stories – co-authored with her husband, Roger Robinson.
Ms. Switzer is an inspiring speaker and will be appearing at Running Zone on Wednesday, Nov. 18 from 3:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. She will also be speaking from 5:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Ms. Switzer will also be signing and selling copies of her book, Marathon Woman.
