BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA (Oct. 8, 2009) – Timing is everything, and the timing couldn’t be any better for Sushoo, the first independent healthcare information exchange in the United States.
Developed in Brevard, Sushoo debuted this week at a time when physicians are ready to scramble to comply with upcoming federal regulations that will penalize any practice that does not have the required electronic medical records capacity.
The birth of Sushoo is due to West Melbourne, Florida entrepreneur Naveen Venkatachalam and his wife, Dr. Geetha Priyanka. “It’s perfect timing,” said Venkatachalam.

NAVEEN VENKATACHALAM, and his wife, Dr. Geetha Priyanka, created Sushoo, the first independent healthcare information exchange in the United States.
This is not the first time the couple has partnered in electronic conception. Six years ago, the two launched DoctorsPartner electronic medical records software, in part because of Priyanka’s need to computerize her office records without spending a bundle.
Affordable, Functional Solution
Former IBM engineer Venkatachalam was up to the challenge, creating an affordable and functional practice management solution that for several years received accolades as one of the top five products nationwide from KLAS, a Utah-based company that monitors healthcare technology products. DoctorsPartner is used in 32 states.
In October, Sushoo “sushes” into medical offices, helping patients avoid duplication of tests and possible misdiagnosis while cutting healthcare costs and paperwork.
With Sushoo, physicians, nursing homes and hospitals–no matter where they are located–can be on the same page, with instant access to patient information. “The network can connect the entire country,” said Venkatachalam.
For patients, Sushoo means convenience. By allowing healthcare providers to simply and securely share data over the internet with another physician or caregiving organization, Sushoo spares patients the hassle of duplicate tests and data collection.
“The doctors are completely in sync,” said Venkatachalam.
Share Charts, Lab Results With a Click
The network’s most salient feature is its flexibility. As long as a practice has an EMR that can integrate with Sushoo, all physicians need do is click once to share charts, lab results and other clinical data. If a practice relies totally on paper records, it can still benefit from Sushoo through a gateway.
Venkatachalam designed the network to attract first-time users wary of investing large amounts of cash. “We’re using a simple design that is very inexpensive to use,” he said.
Before Sushoo’s inception, health information exchanges have been the domain of large multi-physician practices, but Sushoo levels the playing field so that all practices, no matter the size, can participate.
Practices that want to test run the network can participate at no cost. “We make it extremely easy,” said Venkatachalam.
Sushoo Acts As a ‘Watchdog’
By maintaining a real-time profile of every patient, whether they’re at home, in the hospital or a nursing home, Sushoo acts as watchdog. “It avoids a lot of medication errors,” said Priyanka.
Priyanka and Ventakachalam aim to first market Sushoo locally before going national. “The way I see it, we are a year ahead of everyone else,” said Venkatachalam.
