So Simple, Even a Caveman Could Diet

MAN HAS HAD half a million years’ experience with diet. In caveman days, there were no dieticians or physicians; they survived in spite of their total ignorance of nutritional requirements or recommendations.
CAVEMEN could not go to the local convenience store or be lured by the “golden arches.” Somehow, they managed quite well without counting fats and carbohydrates or by following the American Heart Association guidelines.
Early humans survived on whatever they could forage for approximately a hundred thousand generations. They were predominantly hunters and gatherers and lived off what the earth provided naturally.
The caveman diet was rich in a large number of plants, and the meat intake mostly consisted of game foods. The herding of animals had not yet been achieved, so Game was hunted intensely – and animals are lower in fat and higher in protein in a wild state.
Early humans’ activity level was naturally very high. Food was not readily available in the immediate vicinity, so hunting and gathering trips were required to provide for basic necessities. On these excursions, they picked fresh fruit, vegetables, and nuts of all different varieties and color.
They knew that those things tasted good. But we now know that multicolored skins contain flavonoids, naturally occurring chemical that protect us against certain diseases (which we will discuss in more detail later). There was no processing of carbohydrate-rich foods, and items such as white bread, pasta, processed candies, and cereals, which modern humans seem to think we can’t live without, were unimaginable back then. If sugars were available at all, they were eaten in their natural state.
A typical food pyramid currently has at its base six servings of bread, cereals, pasta, and rice.
According to the USDA and AHA, these foods are recommended as the mainstay of our diet, outnumbering all the other food groups. A caveman couldn’t find these car-heavy foods, yet he survived for hundreds of thousands of years without them in any significant quantity. How then, have they become considered such a big part of our “essential” daily nutrition?
The AHA would have you eating 55 percent of your diet in carbohydrates alone, with cookies, cakes, and oils in the top tier. A caveman most likely would not have enjoyed this pyramid. Preferring a handful of cherries to a stalk of wheat any day”.
Advice from “Dear Flabby”
Lastly, we have been given bad advice. The medical profession has been saying for the last thirty years that the low-fat diet is the healthiest. It was thought to lower cholesterol and therefore lower the risk of heart disease, which is what the seven-country study was all about.
It was also believed that a low-fat diet aided in weight loss. The logic went like this: Fat is very calorie-intense; there are nine calories in one gram of fat. But there are only four calories in one gram of carbohydrates or protein. So, if you cut out the item highest in calories (fat), you should naturally lose weight.
Based on that equation, the low-fat diet has been recommended for weight loss by the medical profession since I graduated from medical school in 1978. Throughout twenty-two years of practice, I had repeated the mantra that I had heard over and over again: patients will lose weight by following a low-fat diet, which is healthy and good for your heart. Even now, a large portion of the medical field continues to endorse this theory.
There was a problem, though. My patients weren’t losing weight.
Of course, I had a good explanation for that: they must be doing it wrong! They were cheating or not exercising – they had to be at fault somehow. Some of them even started to gain weight on this diet. The audacity of them!
It took me many years to understand why, but my period of enlightenment began when I realized that it was the mantra that was wrong! A low-fat diet will make you fat! It was all a hoax.
“So, we finally seem to have our answer: we eat malnourished food; don’t exercise at, after, to, or from work; enjoy slouching on our couches; and have been following the wrong diet because of bad advice that has been passed along from the medical profession for decades.
Hence, an epidemic of bad lifestyle habits has promoted an epidemic of medical illness. Now you understand how we got into this twenty-first century dilemma”. The question is: How do we get out of it?
“Flavonoids are the secret miracle in medicine – so secret that most people have never heard of them. One of the major conclusions of the seven-country study was to eat more flavonoids in order to protect against cardiovascular disease.
In spite of that, however, they remain largely anonymous. Flavonoids definitely need a better press agent! In the meantime, allow me to introduce them to you now.
Flavonoids are powerful antioxidants present in many natural foods that help protect the arteries from the damaging effects of cholesterol and oxygen working together. There are over four thousand varieties of flavonoids indentified in various plants.
You can usually see them because they are responsible for the bright external covering on many fruits and vegetables. The brilliant hues of tomatoes, apples, oranges, and blueberries, as well as the deep, dark color of coca, are all due to flavonoid components. Other major sources, in addition to fruits and vegetables, are tea, wine, and juices.
