Gynecologist Clayton and wife Jan, together with obstetrician/gynecologist Dr. Sherri Caplan, are teaming up with Red Hot Mamas, the nation’s largest menopause management education and support program, to bring the latest information on menopause to the ladies of the Space Coast.

“This is the national group that is in the forefront,” said the Merritt Island physician.

In practice for almost three decades, Dr. Clayton has seen his patients evolve from the childbearing stage into the “post production” phase of menopause and its many emotional and physical issues.

“My practice has been changing from younger women to women in their 40s and 50s,” said Dr. Clayton. “I’ve found that too many women are getting too much bad information. They usually get information from television or a magazine article. We want women to be well-educated, so my wife and I started researching credible options.”

Red Hot Mamas Featured in National Media

Enter the Red Hot Mamas, a program created in 1991 by Karen Giblin. The Mamas aims to broaden women’s knowledge base about menopause and thus nurture consumers who are empowered, knowledgeable participants in the management of their menopause. The program has been featured in Family Circle, Good Housekeeping, Time, CNN, Today Show and Good Morning America, among other media venues, and has been recommended by the North American Menopause Society.

"Educating yourself about menopause is a must," said Giblin. "Red Hot Mamas helps take the mystery out of menopause by offering essential, up-to-date information. Learning the facts can help you make objective and informed decisions about your health at menopause and beyond. Red Hot Mamas provides education, support, understanding, hope and optimism," Giblin said.

Working with hospitals and physician group practices in the United States and Canada, the Mamas revolve around free monthly informational presentations.

As the Baby Boomers age, Dr. Clayton sees a critical need for these types of educational programs.

“The Boomers are a huge group,” he said. “In Brevard demographics, we have a tremendous amount of people over 55.”

Cape Canaveral Hospital will launch Red Hot Mamas with Dr. Clayton’s workshop on “Pause and Effect: the Transition into Menopause” on Wednesday, Sept. 23. The program runs from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Topics include nutrition, exercise and weight management, alternatives to hormone therapy, heart disease, osteoporosis, urinary concerns, breast issues and memory loss and menopause.

All Red Hot Mamas programs are free, but seating is limited. Please call 434-4335 to reserve a spot.
