ARTIST'S RENDERING: The Wuesthoff Hospice and Palliative Care's Dr. Jey Pillai Center for Hospice Care groundbreaking event is set for Aug. 28 in Rockledge, Florida. The event is open to the public.
BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Wuesthoff Hospice and Palliative Care held a groundbreaking ceremony for their new Dr. Jey Pillai Center for Hospice Care on Friday, Aug. 28.
Located on two-acres in Rockledge on Eyster Boulevard, just east of Huntington Lane, the 12-bed, 17,400 sq. ft. hospice house will feature an ‘Old Florida’ theme. Each private room will have a screened patio overlooking a canopy of oak and pine trees, with a memorial walkway and gardens underneath. The City of Rockledge voted to rezone the property in order for the hospice house to be built on the site.
“A comprehensive hospice program needs a hospice house because many people who cannot be served at home need an alternative location for their care,” said Judy Powers, Executive Director, Wuesthoff Hospice and Palliative Care. “Unfortunately, traditional clinical settings do not always provide the serene, private environment which will be offered in our Hospice House.”

“The project’s estimated cost is approximately $5 million. Donors have given $3.5 million putting us within $1.5 million of estimated costs,” said Dorothy Allen, President, Wuesthoff Health System Foundation.
“Wuesthoff Foundation is reaching out to inspire some very special people in the community to put the final touches on fundraising for the project,” said Allen.

In addition, naming opportunities for the facility are also available with various foundations, civic clubs and organizations being approached to lend their support. Wuesthoff Hospice and Palliative Care opened in 1984, and was Brevard County's first licensed hospice.
What is Hospice and Palliative Care?
Hospice and palliative care is compassionate care for people facing a life-limiting illness or injury. The care involves a team-oriented approach to expert medical care, pain management, and emotional and spiritual support expressly tailored to the patient's needs and wishes, as well as support for the patient's loved ones.
The goal of palliative care is to achieve the best possible quality of life for patients and their families. At the center of hospice and palliative care is the belief that each of us has the right to die pain free with dignity, and that our families will receive the necessary support to allow us to do so.
